Today Myself, Cindy, Lesley and Sandy had a trip out to Charleton to see some of the tourist spots that Courtney had recommended. Aunty Joan wasn't up for coming as there would be a lot of walking involved.
We did a guided tour of an old building that was originally used for trade and then was turned into a kind of prison. The buildings were so lovely and each one very different from the one next to it.
After a bit of sightseeing we had lunch at a seafood place called Hymans and Sandy said I needed to try Crabs legs which is another first for me. They only had the Snow crab legs which are apparently smaller than some others they usually have. Also had something called hushpuppies which were a corn meal kind of doughnut and were sweet. It always fascinates me that Americans mix sweet and savoury with their meals. One of the appetisers was fried green tomatoes, which is as it says unripened tomatoes that are in a kind of KFC coating.
After lunch, we had a walk through the market which used to be the old slave market. The market was long undercover traders all selling various things. I managed to get a Christmas bauble for Freya as she had asked for one as a souvenir. I also got one for myself as a keepsake from my trip. I might start getting a bauble from each place I visit so my tree has more meaning when it's decorated.
Just as we got inside the market the heavens opened and a storm came over head. You could hear the thunder claps and then the lightning was quite soon after which meant it was really close. The streets were flooded within minutes. Luckily for us, the place Courtney told us to get dessert from (Kaminsky's) was just across the street from the Market, so we managed to dart across. Lesley and Cindy waited until the lightning had eased off, but me and Sandy just ran straight over and ordered our dessert and coffee. I got he carrot cake which was huge and actually wished I had got the pecan or key-lime pie as you can get carrot cake at home.
Cindy had the mixed fruit cobbler and Lesley had the pecan pie, which looked lovely.
The rain didn't seem like it was easing off any time soon so Sandy went to get the car and bring it around to the street outside so that we didn't all have to get wet.
We had planned to go to Rainbow Row, which was another place on the list but due to the rain we just managed to drive past and grab a few pics. It's a row of houses all painted different pastel colours, but seems to be something the area is known for. I think even my Christmas bauble has the rainbow row picture on it.
By the time we got back to the lakehouse the sun was just going down, so we had another trip to the dock to watch the sunset. I don't think I would eve get bored of that view.
I went to bed around 9:30pm as it seems like a long day when you are out in the heat.
