Okay so I have touched on this before but I wanted to give it it’s own post.
It's a bit like a bucket list but it's just an ongoing list I add to constantly to
I have started doing posts about the main influences in my life. One of those influences is my mum and she always used to make plans for what she was going to do when she retired. Sadly due to ill health, those things never happened.
I was determined not to make the same mistake at some point in my life (might have been just before getting this book in 1994) I swore that I would try and live as full a life as possible and not put things off for my retirement. That was probably one of the reason's I started my "Life List". It's kind of like a bucket list but instead of just creating a short list of 10/20 things to do before you die, I just add to it constantly in a book. It was a gift from Rachel on Christmas 1994 after I mentioned I wanted to start my list. It isn't even half full of things yet so plenty more things to add to it. The things I put in don't have to be big activities or anything, I just write in anything I like the sound of, see on TV, hear of someone doing or see online etc.
I realised that I too was guilty of putting things off. Example: I would be sat in a restaurant looking at the menu and say "oooh smoked salmon, I've always fancied trying that" and then the waiter would ask what I wanted for starter "prawn cocktail please". Simply because I knew I liked that and thought I will try the salmon another time. Then before you know it 'another time' hasn't happened because life has passed you by. So now every time I think "oh that looks good" or "I might try that one day" it gets added to my book if I can't do it there and then. Then the next time the opportunity presents itself for something that's in my book, I have to do it. I then cross them off with a highlighter so I can still see the things.
Having this book has made me take advantage of so many opportunities that I may otherwise have missed or put off for "another day". It's also nice to be able to look back and see all the things you've done. I remember checking into a Hostel on my Around the World Trip and I saw a leaflet on the counter advertising a skydive. So before I had even checked in fully I had booked to do a skydive the next day. Had it not been in my book I may have seen the leaflet and thought no more about it, instead I immediately took the opportunity to do it.
So if you only do one thing, get yerself a book and start making things happen !!
