Around the World Trip - Day 60 - 2nd March 2009 – Ravenshoe Wildlife Sanctuary

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

My alarm didn’t go off this morning so it was 6:45 when I woke as, thanks to Flo giving me a knock as she passed to go for breakfast.

Did the watering in record time and then went and shifted the other piece of tree trunk before Harry mentioned anything. I then got the strimmer and made a start on the dingo pen just so he knew that I’m not a child and if he asks me once to do something I remember. The girls were given the vegetable garden to weed and get organised and were doing it all morning until lunch.

After I finished the dingo pen I was just going to get a drink and have a break when Harry got a phone call from someone in town who said there was a 5 metre snake in their garden and it would need at least two people. Harry asked if I would go with him to help as it might be heavy. I’m not a fan of snakes but I guess that’s the best way to get over your fear, so I went with him. On the way he said that they usually are nothing like the size that people say they are as they just think they look big because they don’t see that many of them.

When we got to town the guy was waiting for us and explained it had already eaten something as it had a big lump in its belly and was curled up in the sun. He spotted it when he was weeding and had put his hand on it, then the head poped up. Oh my god I would of died lol. It wasn’t so big when we looked, I’d say about two metres and a but it was pretty thick. Harry grabbed it just behind the head so it couldn’t bite him and then grabbed the tail to it couldn’t wrap around him. I held the potatoe sack open and then in it went. It looked like it might have eaten a cat or something as the lump was pretty big. I had to hold the sack on the floor between my legs while we drove to the tip. Harry let it go there as he said it would have plenty of rats to feed on. On the way back he asked if I had to leave next Monday as I was a really good help and could stay longer for free if I wanted. It was a nice offer but I want to enjoy some of Australia not just work and I only have two weeks after I finish to see the place. It wouldn’t be so bad if you worked Monday to Friday and got the weekend off or something but you work every day in the morning so can’t really go anywhere. Plus the info global experience send you says you work 25 hours a week and I’m sure you end up doing a lot more than that to be honest as it’s not really explained what your hours are as such so you’re never quite sure when you have finished and are free to do what you want. Also he seems to be picking on the girls a bit and if they go I don’t really want to stick around. They have been talking about leaving on the Monday when I do as they don’t want to be here on their own when I go as it will be boring. They said they would give me a lift back to cairns so that could work out pretty good, so will shall see.

When we got back I had a coffee and then went and took the strimmer to the eagles enclosure where he keeps the bigger birds of prey. I strimmed the whole are which was a fair size and it took me until lunch. I’d finished the main bit when it ran out of petrol, so I went to the house for a bottle of water while I was filling the strimmer with petrol anyway. Harry said that lunch would be in half and hour but I wanted to get it finished and knew I would be able to get it done in half and hour easily.

Saski was in the kitchen pottering about as usual, not sure what she’s been doing all day cos I haven’t seen her around. I invited her to come swimming with us tomorrow if the weather is good and she actually said yes (but we shall see if she comes or not).

After lunch I went into town with Letitflo so we could do some more washing and use the internet. Harry said that Karin would do some washing for me but I just gave her my work clothes as I didn’t want to be cheeky. When I mentioned that to the girls they said that when they asked about laundry Harry said the pump was broken which made me feel a bit awkward. He seems to be picking on the girls a bit and has made a few comments that I don’t like, but I am trying to bite my tongue.

We got back from town just in time for dinner which was pastrami with mashed potatoes and green beans. Once we’d eaten dinner Harry dumped a box of cakes on the table and went to bed. Not sure what’s wrong with him at the mo but it feels like the girls have done something wrong, but I don’t know why. Went to the TV caravan for a bit and watched a few shows then went to bed.
