Around the World Trip - Day 58 - 28th Feb 2009 – Ravenshoe Wildlife Sanctuary

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

Woke up at 5am feeling knackered and it was still dark. Quick shower, coffee and a bowl of cereal and it was time to go to the gate to the main road to meet Warwick. He was on time at 6am and then we had about an hours drive to Yungaburra to the market. When I got in the car he told me that they hadn’t approved the sanctuary to sell raffle tickets so it will just be trying to sell T-shirts and getting donations off people.

Got to the market and pitched up the gazebo and the tables with all the stuff on them and then spent the day chatting to people who were asking about the court case etc. Only two people bought the T-shirts, but quite a few looked at them, but I think they are over priced at $25 but it’s not my worry I guess. Had a bit of a wander round while I was there and bought a salt rock thingy that’s meant to be good as a deodorant (apparently) but we shall see if it’s any good.

Counted up the money at about 12:30pm and we had raised $231.00 which isn’t bad I guess for a mornings work. Quite a few people put notes in the box and were really keen to support the cause, which was nice as often people aren’t interested in animals.

On the way back Warwick stopped off at a few of the local view points and sights so that I could take a few pictures. We went to the curtain fig tree that grew in the branch of another treet initially until it strangled the tree and then fell over into the neighbouring tree. It then lay down these root things again to the ground, which covered the other tree in a kind of root curtain (hence the name) and killed that tree also. After that we went to Millstream falls which used to run one of the mills and was created by one of the volcano’s erupting (see I did listen). Its sometimes hard though as Warwick is an old guy and he started to tell you these long drawn out tales and kind of forgets what he’s going to say next part way through and there are then long gaps. After you think the story is over he suddenly picks up where he left off as is he never stopped and you meant to keep up. I feigned sleeping after a while as I was really tired and thought it would be easier than trying to keep making my interested faces and noises lol.

When we got back to Eagles Nest, the girls were in their caravan as it was too hot to do any work. Harry was ranting that they had used the outside loo that was meant to be his and Karins and had filled the chemical loo already as they had been using jugs of water to flush it (as it has no actual flush just a drop down bottom thing into a tank). I confessed that I didn’t know we had separate toilets either (Saskia never said but I just said I wasn’t told, and didn’t say by who). Anyway poo hoo haa over and it was time for dinner. We had fish fingers, the spuds from yesterday with mayo and salt n pepper added (nothing gets past me lol), beetroot and the tomato and pepper salad that was left. I think Gordon Ramsay’s job is safe for a while. No dessert tonight, not sure if that’s to punish the girls for the loo thing as he said he will have to get it emptied and it costs $250. Oh well I can do with cutting down anyway.

No neighbours after dinner as it’s Saturday lol. Instead we went to the caravan (with our sneaky wine and coke) and watched a film called centre stage. It finished at 8:50pm and by then we were all goosed anyway so we went to bed.
