Around the World Trip -Day 49 - 19th Feb 2009 – Malborough Sounds to Wellington

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

Woke up at about 3am the first time as I could hear the water slashing about in the holding tank under the boat. I could see out of the skylight in bit I was sleeping in and the sky was jet black with hundred or really clear stars so I lay there for a bit just soaking it all in and thinking how lucky I am to be in this position (apart from the having no job bit obviously lol).

Got back to sleep and then woke up about 6am just as the sun was starting to come up so I got up and took a few photos. Woke up properly then at about 8am and got up and had a shower. It was a very quick shower as the water was cool because the engine hadn’t been on during the night, which heats up the water, It all added to the experience though and I don’t really take long showers at the best of times anyway.

We had bacon and egg cooked on the barbeque on an English muffin, which was just what the doctor ordered. Straight after breakfast we pulled up the anchor and headed off back to the marina where Geoff keeps his boat. The water was so still on the way back it was unbelievable. There was hardly any waves at all and it was a really smooth ride all the way back apart from one bit when we got to the middle. While it was smooth Kelly suggested I go to the front of the boat to see it from out there. It was so peaceful as we cruised alone and the wind was all around you, but it was a nice warm wind as the sun had come up and it was now pretty hot.

Once we got to the marina we washed up all our pots and cleaned the boat up. I must be great to live somewhere that gets good weather and have a boat like that. Being able to catch your dinner and live of the sea for free. Well not really for free as I believe it cost quite a bit to run a boat, but you kinda get the jist lol.

Once everything was sorted we packed away stuff (which there was a fair bit of for just one night lol) and then headed back to Kelly’s apartment in Wellington. We dropped off our stuff and then went into town to buy any last minute souvenirs and things to take home. We wanted to get Kelly something as a thank you for putting us up and entertaining us al this time. She had made sure we say and did so many things while we were here, things we wouldn’t of got to do if we’d of just been left to our own devices. While we were shopping Kelly took an interest in a picture that had 3 different sepia photographs of Wellington in it. She mentioned that she had one similar but with pictures of the other place she lived in. This seemed like the perfect gift to get her, so Phil suggested going to the Museum and I said I would go back with Kelly (so he could nip off and get it for her).

Me and Kelly went to one of the sea front bars and got a cocktail each and sat in the sun for a bit then headed back to her apartment.

Once Phil got back Kelly started dinner. Phil barbequed some steaks and sausages we’d bought from the supermarket. We had bought some local lamb and mint ones and also some venison ones, as they had a much richer flavour than plain ones. We had the meat with some boiled potatoes and salad, with a couple of beers.

After dinner we watched a bit of telly and then turned in as it had been quite a long day. We have our flight back to Sydney tomorrow and then we go our separate ways. Phil’s is just a transit flight but I’ve booked a night at the hostel we stayed at before so I know the score. I then have my flight the next day over to Cairns so that I’m there in plenty of time to get the bus up to my conservation project. Can’t wait to start that as it will be another new experience and I will hopefully meet a lot of new people (unless I’m the only one there as its out of season or something lol) .
