Phil and Kelly shared the driving to Queenstown as I had forgotten my license. We passed through some gorgeous countryside so stopped quite a few times to take photos. On the way we called at a supermarket to get some for food for lunch, we just bought some meat and cheese etc for sandwiches and drink and crisp. We pulled up at the side of a lake and had a picnic in the car boot. The lake was bright blue because of all the minerals from the volcano and it was all freshwater so we had a little drink just to say we’d drank from it. I’ve never seen water so blue in a lake, it looks like the colour of water in the Maldives or somewhere.
Once we got into Queenstown we drove to the lakefront to look for accommodation for two nights. We pulled up right on the front where you overlooked the lake and I thought we were gonna pay a fortune for accommodation in this kind of location. The first two we went to were hostels but they were both full as its peak season. We went to one called the Lodges that had different size apartments but only had a three bedroom one available. The price was $230 per night which worked out about £20 each per night. The apartment was massive and was split over three floors with a lounge and kitchen on the middle floor, bedroom on the ground floor that was a bit dark and the view was blocked by the car on the drive. There was a front bedroom looking over the lake on the top floor and another at the back. All had their own bathrooms. Kelly said she wasn’t bothered about a view of the lake so went for the one at the back and me and Phil flipped a coin for the front room at the top. I won the toss so got the front room with the view.
Rachel and Sam had arranged to meet us in Queenstown for valentines day as they would be here the same time so we text them to let them know where we were as they had already booked hostel before they arrived. They came down to our apartment to meet us and couldn’t believe what we had got for not much more than they had paid for a hostel, I guess we got lucky as it could have been full everywhere.
We called down to the reception to see if we could get anything booked to go to Milford Sound and the glacier for tomorrow as we really wanted to do a helicopter ride as none of us had done one before. Luckily she managed to get us on one for 1pm in the afternoon so we could do stuff in the morning at our leisure. The cost was just over £200 each but its definitely something I wanted to do while we were here.
Once we got it booked we got changed and then went to find somewhere to eat and have a few drinks. The girls had already eaten so went for a wander round while we ate in a place called Chico’s that was upstairs and overlooked the main street. I had venison as its something I hadn’t eaten before and I like to try new foods and experiences. The meal was gorgeous and definitely features up there in my top ten so far, it had a really rich and fruit jus and was on a bed of mustard mash and the vegetables were cooked perfectly.
The girls met us at Chico’s and then we went to a bar further down where they had a sign saying “Bubbles (Champagne) $3 until midnight”. I got the first round in and it worked out at £5 for a round of 5 drinks. Sadly when we came to order the next round they said they had been drank out of it. We went down the road to another bar that had an offer on 5 Coronas for $30 before the sun went down. It was already dark but Phil managed to blag the offer for us anyway. There was a really rowdy kind of 18-30 crowd in on a bar crawl and the place was packed with loads of underage looking drinkers. They left after we’d been there about 10 minutes and the place was dead so we moved on.
A lot of the food places seem to turn into music bars later on and just clear the tables. We ended up in a place with fairly loud music and people dancing on the tables etc and ordered shots etc and danced until about 2am. Rachel was on her way after the first couple of drinks earlier but just seemed to stay at the same level of pissed throughout the night. She’s a right party girl when she has a few drinks and was the first one up dancing and probably the last one too out of us lot. Good on yer Rache !
On the way home there was an outside fire in a burner across the road from our apartment so I sat there for a while as it was really nice sat in the dark with the glowing burner.
