Around the World Trip - Day 42 - 12th Feb 2009 – Sydney to Wellington

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

Woke up at 5am and got showered then went down to breakfast to have the bowl of cereal that the hotel had arranged for us last night. They gave us our clingfillmed cereal bowls and a few slices of bread so we just had to get reception to get us the milk. We couldn’t find any knives so just dipped our toast into jam spreads.

The airport transfer bus came at about 6am and had a few pick ups before setting off to the airport but it still got there in 15 mins tops, so I might book the Y-club for the one night I need a hostel when I come back to Sydney.

The flight was delayed from 9:00am until 10:30am due to overheating problem and then by the time they had identified it we had to wait until 12pm for our slot. It eventually took off at 12:45pm and the take off was a bit bumpy on the way up as the weather was still bad.

We had our in-flight meal quite soon after take off as the flight was just over 3 hours. The meal was a choice of lamb curry or chicken in a creamy sauce with sliced potatoes and veg. We both went for the chicken but yet again the creamy sauce was just to hide the fact that it was scrag end chicken not breast (I should of learnt by now).

Once we landed we went straight through customs and got another passport stamp. Kelly was there to meet us as soon as we went through to arrivals. She seems really nice, she’s got short brown hair, about the same height as me and is a slim build (see pics). It was still raining when we landed, it seems like the bad weather is following us as we’ve barely seem the sun since we left Manchester.

We got to Kelly’s apartment and she made us feel very welcome, with plenty of beers and put out some cheese, crackers and dips while we waited for dinner. We watched a few episodes of a DVD called flight of the Concorde, which is a New Zealand hit show. Dinner was gorgeous, New Zealand lamb that was much leaver and tastier than ours, with roasted potatoes, pumpkin and kumura which is a kind of sweet potato with mixed veg, gravy and mint sauce. It was a really welcome meal to have proper home-cooked food for a change. The roast potatoes were perfect and crispy just like your mum makes lol. We later had a typical New Zealand ice cream called hokey pokey which was a kind of vanilla ice-cream with piece of honeycomb in it.

Kelly has a really nice apartment that’s very modern and on 3 floors, with great views as she is at the top of the hills so overlooks the town. She has cute dog called Millie who’s a Staffordshire terrier (I think) which keeps making me want to have a pet when I get home. I’m just not sure what I would do when I’m at work all day but I will definitely give it some thought when I get home so I have a bit of company. A few drinks later and a few more episodes of flight of the Concorde and it was time for bed.
