Around the World Trip - Day 30 - 31st Jan 2009 – Kuala Lumpur

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

Woke up and went down to breakfast…..OH MY GOD…the choice was immense! There were different stations that served different kinds of food. There was everything from freshly made juices, sushi, Chinese hot food, English breakfast, pastries, you name it they had it (and so did we lol). I tried a bit of various things and Phil tried a bit of EVERYTHING. You could wrap a turd in filo pastry and Phil would eat it I he thought it was something her hadn’t tried before.

After we ate anything that looked edible we made our way to the petronas towers and bought tickets to go onto the sky-bridge, which was a bridge 44 floors up and joined the two towers. We didn’t have to walk that far as the hotel provided a free shuttle to the main shopping centre. It was like a kind of large gold buggie that went back and forth every few minutes. I think the hotel thought we were mad as when we went to get the buggie to the shopping centre it was bouncing down with rain. They had to fold down all the plastic sides to keep us dry. It wasn’t too bad though as they dropped us right outside the shopping centre so we only had to jump out and straight into the centre.

We went into the indoor centre but soon realised it was just like the arndale in Manchester so wasn’t much fun so we decided to get the subway to the outside local market. It was very busy and filled with stalls on both sides of a covered walkway. Almost everyone was trying to sell you a watch, but didn’t really hassle you if you said you weren’t interested. You could barter them right down on the prices as they seemed to be interested in a sale no matter what they had to sell it for. I bought a T-shirt for £3, that started at bout £20, a cap for £4 that was £15 and a pair of flip flops for £2. I wore the flip flops for a bout 10 minutes then had to swap em back to my old ones as they were rubbing the top of my feet (but for £2 its worth buying plasters lol).

After shopping for a while we headed back to our hotel and checked out the business centre. They had about 10 PCs and told us they were free to use, GET IN! We printed off the directions to the train station for tomorrow and while we had access to printers I decided to print out all my volunteer stuff for the wildlife sanctuary. On our way out the woman behind the desk informed me that you had to pay for the printing..oops. I counted up my pages (while skipping a few just in case) and it came to 36. She gave me a bill for $90 Singapore dollars (£18). YES I SAID £18 for printing some papers off (50 a piece). I singed the paper whilst muttering my disgust at the cost and pointing out (under my breath in true British style) that they should put a sign up if it cost that much. A pompous businessman on expenses would have probably kicked up a stink and got off without paying but me paying for it myself just signs and takes the hit.

So far Kuala Lumpur seems great, the people are really friendly and can’t do enough for you. Oh and by the way mum and aunty Joan in case you are wondering I put that on nearly every postcard just to make sure the hotel reception post it! Lol. They are hardly gonna take it to the post office for me if I put “the woman on reception had a face like a bashed crab” are they? Lol.

We decided to go out down “BOOM BOOM Street” and sample the bars that had looked so lively last night when we were walking to our hotel. I’m not sure if it was because we went out too early or what but it seemed pretty quiet, and the places that were slightly busy were asking for a cover charge to go in. You try getting a cover charge out of Phil without providing him with free food and drinks at least lol.

After an unsuccessful hunt for some nightlife we ended up getting something to eat in the cheapest place we could find. It looked pretty clean and was upstairs with seats that overlooked the main street. I got lemon chicken with rice for £1.60 which was more than filling so couldn’t really complain.

As it didn’t seem like there was much going on we thought we’d try out the sky-bar back at our hotel that we’d seen get rave reviews in various magazines. We got the lift up to the 35 floor and noticed the sign explaining the dress code which was no flip flops, no singlets and no shorts. We whipped back to the room and got changed as we had been wondering round in shorts due to the heat.

When we walked in the bar we realised that this also doubled up as the pool. The middle of the room had the indoor pool with bar tables and stool down one side and then Moroccan style seating down the other side that were sunk lower than the top of the pool level. These seated areas were each in a window booth area that overlooked the city all lit up. These were all taken so we got a high table and bar stools near the bar. The bar was very trendy and there was a DJ playing dance music and the lighting was quite low with the pool glowing blue as the main feature. It looked like somewhere my mate Jason would love; he’d probably stroll in very slowly accessorised up the max and be shown straight to a window booth. ;-)

Everyone was really well dressed and it defiantly felt like a cool place to be, at home you wouldn’t be able to have something like this as people would get pissed and end up being pushed in the pool. I didn’t get the feeling that these kind of people would be like that, plus nobody could afford to get pissed at these prices lol. We all ordered cocktails and then tried to discretely take photo’s (without the flash) without looking too much like photos. As the drinks were expensive so we all only had the one and took our time with it (under Phil’s strict instructions lol. It didn’t look like we were going to get a window booth any time soon so after we finished our dinks we went to bed.
