Around the World Trip - Day 26 - 27th Jan 2009 – Hong Kong

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

I woke up at 8am without any alarm and uploaded my photos from my camera while Phil was sleeping as we didn’t really need to be up so early I just couldn’t go back to sleep. Had breakfast and I did some more washing, as the last lot had dried quite quickly hung over the washing line in the bathroom.

After breakfast we caught the tube over to Hong Kong island and then walked over to the tram stop. The tram ride was £4.80 which included £1.50 for access to the Sky viewing area, which is the highest 360 degree viewing area in the area. The tram took you up a steep incline where you could get some quite good view of the high rise buildings.

When we got to the top you came out into a large gift shop area (very Florida lol), where there were quite a lot of shops all clustered together on one floor. I bought a small Buddha as a souvenir but ideally I want a dragon, I just haven’t seen any that aren’t very heavy as I need to watch my luggage weight.

We then took escalators to the viewing area where you could get a good view, although not brilliant as it was still quite cloudy and smoggy. While we were looking round I saw a group of Chinese young women who were taking photos of one of the them with a birthday cake, so I thought I would continue my “random acts of kindness” and I gave the small Buddha to her for a present. They took my photo with her and I got one too and left with a warm glow inside lol.

After we’d took all our photo’s we headed back down to the bottom and enquired about the times for the Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant. Due to it being New Years Day it was going to be closing at 4.30pm today so instead of being able to go later tonight we would have to have a late lunch/early dinner. We caught the bus over to the waterfront and then you had to get a small boat over to Jumbo. Like most places the restaurant had all the New Year decorations and had three floors of different places to eat. There was a “western” menu downstairs and the two upper floors were Chinese food.

We went up to the middle floor as the top one was closing and got seats outside with view of the boats coming and going. There were two menu’s, on

e that was very pricey and didn’t really sound very nice, so we went for the Dim Sum menu. We both ordered two dishes that were for one person and then a couple of 4 piece Dim Sum to share. I wasn’t really bowled over with the food as it was all that steamed dim sum and had the texture of overcooked pasta. I would have preferred a bit of variety and was thankful for the crispy spring rolls with mango that I had ordered. We washed it all down with a glass of beer each and then headed back to our hotel.

After a short rest we made our way over to the large viewing area outside at the back of our hotel that overlooked the harbor ready for the fireworks. The fireworks started at about 8.15pm and went on for about half an hour. There were lots of fireworks to the point where the sky was filled with smoke and you could hardly see the later fireworks. We managed to get some really good photos of the fireworks and the skyline later on after the fireworks.
