Around the Work Trip - Day 19 - 20th Jan 2009– Beijing

Went to the Summer Palace, which took us ages to get to as we had to get the tube for about 20 minutes and then a bus for about an hour and a half. We got the local bus was it’s cheaper and we are used to it now and know what to do. Did the tour of the palace and took loads of pictures (as usual).

Finished the Summer Palace at about 2.30pm so we decided to head over to the Zoo so we could get a look at some Panda’s, before they become completely extinct ! Tried a local kebab type thing which was shredded meat (don’t think it was anything dodgy but you never know :-/) stir fried with spring onion and some sort of sauce and then this fills a muffin cut in half (or some C

hinese alternative to a muffin).

Spent about an hour in the zoo and then got the tube over to the nearest station to the clothes Market. We had heard it was really cheap so wanted to get a few things before we leave tomorrow. It was about a 20 minute walk from the station but we all had bargain hunting on the brain so it passed quickly.

I sort of knew what I wanted before we get there but just hoped it wouldn’t be a load of rubbish stuff when we got there. The building was alike a large indoor market on 3 floors with a great big neon sign outside so you couldn’t miss it. The first stall we came to I saw a T-shirt I wanted with Chinese writing on it so asked the price. She said it was 100 yen (£10) but in the end I got it for £3 which I thought was a bargain. We got quite good at the bargaining as they always started off with stupid prices but we just worked out first what we wanted to pay and took it from there. I got a D&G belt for £2.50, another T-shirt for £2 and a pair of Diesel trainers for £6 (they started off at £48 lol).

Took Jason and Peter to our “local” place for something to eat. When we walked in the woman looked really pleased that we had come back and then we gestured that we had brought two more friends and seemed really happy and was telling other Chinese people in her lingo obviously). There were lots of Chinese guys in there and groups of teenagers coming and going and they all looked bemused that we were in a local place but were all very polite and smiled at us.

We all got baskets and picked our food and ordered 4 large bottles of beer. The food came quite quick and we soon polished off the beers and got a second lot. The food was really nice and this time Phil and me tried more stuff that we hadn’t had the last time (as well as some favourites). We had another lot of beers and then paid (as we have to be up really early for the flight tomorrow to Tokyo). I bought a few Chinese foods to take home for the family to try and in total my meal, beers, and 4 things to take home came to £2.70 Hahahahaha you couldn’t probably get a beer in a restaurant at home for that.

Got back to the hotel and packed all our stuff so that we could just get up, shower and go in the morning. I’m sure my bag weighs more than when I came (hope not). I have bought quite a few things though while I have been here I guess.
