Around the World Trip - Day 70 - 12th March 2009 – Cairns to Airlie Beach

Woke up pretty early as Hayley was leaving at 7:30am so was pottering around the room. She said a whispered bye and then waas off into the Cairns heat. Flo was up soon after and packing her rucksack ready to get a flight to New Zealand. She hadn't had any look getting a job and so I think money was starting to dry out so she wanted to move on and maybe cut her trip shorter than planned. Leti still has another night at the backpackers as she has found an aupare job with a family in Cairns for 3 months.

I said goodbye to Leti and Flo as Leti was going with her to the airport and wouldn't be back before I left. Once I'd packed I left my luggage in the laundry area and walked over to the bus stop in the centre I was wetter on the inside than the coat was on the outside cos I was sweating so much.

I grabbed a sandwich then we jumped on the bus towards the airport to collect our car. The car was a Toyota Camari and looked pretty big for a campact grade car.

We headed back to our hostels to collect our bags and then set off on our “road trip”. We had quite as few kilometres to cover so tried not to stop too much. Sam admitted she likes driving which suits me fine as I don't mind being driven, just call me Miss Daisy lol.

We stopped off for at Cardwell for a bite to eat and took some pictures on the beach before hitting the road again.

By the time we got to Airlie Beach it was about 7:30pm and had already gone dark. We drove around for a bit to find somewhere to park and then had a walk up the main street to find a hostel with vacancies. Eventually we found Magnums, which was a really big complex really central and seemed pretty lively. We booked a twin room rather than a dorm as they looked very 18-30 stylee and we could imagine a lot of bed swapping going on so thought it best. The room was the size of a garden shed and contained just a bunk bed and no room to swing a cat (if you felt that way inclined). Why do people want room to swing a cat?it seems to be a popular past time lol. We had a can of bundaberge rum and coke each that we'd bought at our stop off. Said hello to our neighbours who were two very good looking Irish lads and then got ready for dinner.

After a quick freshen up we went down to the main outside bar area where a DJ was playing for a drink and some food. Sam had a small pasta dish and I had lasagne with chips and salad that came on a plate the size of a dustbin lid. I couldn't eat it all and felt stuffed after it.

We headed up the street after we'd eaten to try and walk some food off. The first bar we went in we bumped into the afore mentioned Irish lads and ended up with them all night. It was a bit of a struggle at first to get the drink down but a few belches and there was room again lol.

We went with the Irish lads to an irish pub when the music started to go a bit pants and the place started to empty. I ended up attracting the attention of a girl on a hen night who had a load of playing cards with various challenges on and kept getting me to help her complete them lol.

Danced and partied till the wee hours and then got back to our room at about 4:30am.
