Around the World Trip - Day 68 - 10th March 2009 – Cairns

Had a nice lay in as we didn’t have to get up for work or anything it was bliss (apart from the fact that I had forgot to cancel my 6am alarm, not impressed lol). It was far too hot to sunbath or even think about being in the sun. They even have sunburn warnings that say things like “burn time 6 minutes” so you know how hot it is.

Sam had done a lot of research into the road trip we are planning to do and has found the car hire prices and the cost of a train for me from Brisbane to Sydney, as she wants to stay in Brisbane longer. We are planning to drive down the coast and stop off at various places, then I want to get to Sydney for the 23rd March as my flight to Chile is on the 26th but I want to cram in a night out with a day to recover lol. We haven’t put together a route or decided where we want to go yet but she is booking the car hire today so we are all sorted on that front. The rest we can play by ear and just stop off at a hostel that looks nice on the way to each place we wanna see. I wouldn’t mind getting to Fraiser Island as it’s meant to be beautiful. We’ve also talked about both wanting to go white water rafting so if we can fit that in somewhere then that should be good. I want to try and cram in as many experiences as possible from “my book” so I can cross a load off when I get home. It’s been a while since I crossed any off so I’m gonna make up for lost time.

All this travelling is making me want to do it again in a few years but maybe take a year out. I will have to see what the job front is like when I get back and try to save up some money as I go. If I don’t overspend on this trip though I might pay some money off my mortgage to bring the term and the interest down a bit while the rates aren’t too high (like you need to know any of this lol). Sorry I digress….

We booked another night at the hostel so we could go out tonight and not worry about getting up at the crack of dawn. I don’t know who dawn is but her crack seems to get about a bit lol (oooh cheeky, sorry mum). The dorm we are (3 Kangaroos) in isn’t available though so we still have to be up relatively early to check out and move to 4 turtles dorm. She said it’s one of their best rooms but I find it hard to believe any room with multiple bunk beds can be particularly great.

We went to the Woolshed again for our free meal. This time I went for the chilli. Surprisingly it looked and tasted just like the Spag bol but with kidney beans and a bit of chilli powder thrown in. The girls shared a salad as they were a) not that hungry and b) skint. We had a few drinks as it was $10 for 5 drinks with a voucher thingy. So we got the vouchers and mixed our drinks as you do.

After a while in Australians version of an Oldham fun pub I decided enough was enough so told the girls I was going on to a bar I’d found last time I was here cos they wanted an early-ish night.

I wandered down to “Saphire bar” (don’t ask lol) and it was pretty empty compared to last time. It is midweek though so I guess that’s why. More disappointingly though was that it shut at 12am…WHAT ? I hear you shout,. I know just what I thought. Anyway some random with dreadlocks came over talking to me and asking to look at my tattoos, which I obliged. He then invited me to join him and his mates for a drink. I will give you the run down….

Dreadlock Dave (not his real name but I didn’t catch it)…he’s been travelling the world for the past 9 years, and looks like his hair has things living in it.

Fat Freddy - (again not his name) who was a fat and loud ozzy guy who was extremely drunk and was making very load and crude comment about how he’d like to see my tattoo’d arm holding god knows what (and it wasn’t a morrisons carrier bag full of shopping I’ll tell yer).

Headscalf Harry – (well it was more of a Bandanna but I needed the BB for the next person) seemed okay and the fact that he was embarrassed by Bald Bens comment meant he mustn’t have been that drunk (nobody was THAT drunk).

Brown-eyed Brian – Was the nicest looking of the bunch and was quite chatty and friendly. Also he was the boyfriend of HH, which I found out after 30 minutes of thinking I was being chatted up lol.

Anyway to cut a long story short as I’ve got more living to do. I left the bar at about 12:20am with Dreadlock Dave in toe who insisted on talking me to another bar. It was SO not my kinda thing and had a miss wet T-shirt competition on (nuff sed) but it was open later so I stayed. Oh and as we left the first bar DD said “oh let me get my case”. I figured 9 years of travelling it would be huge. He pulls out this thing that was no bigger than an A4 piece of paper. It was an old brown leather thing that looked very Mr Bean-esque. I said “is that is? My toiletry bag is bigger than that”. He said he travelling light but I thought so do I but I would need more than a pair of shorts and a T-shirt for 9 years travelling.

Anyway as it got late realised I wasn’t gonna shake DD so said “just nipping the loo” and tried to make an exit for the stairs. Caught red handed he said “where you going” I said “sorry I thought they were down here, but shall we go?” “yea ok” he replied. “go get yer case then “ I said and as he turned to go I legged it down the stairs and outside and hid round the corner LOL. Did I feel guilty? Nah I never invited him to tag along in the first place lol.

On the way home I bumped into HH who was going my way so we shared a taxi.

Alls well that ends well. ☺
